Other System Processes
We have three other systems, one for short answer questions up to 100 words in length, and one for larger answer questions up to 600 words in length, and one for NAPLAN narrative essays. Microsoft Word® documents are the preferred format.
For the large answers, we need 100 human graded essays on the required topic to train the system, and a further 100 human graded essays to validate the scoring equation developed during the training process. Better performance results if the same 2-3 humans grade each essay, but this is not necessary.
Typically, the system/human score correlation matches the human/human correlation of the training essays.
We also need a few model answers - one is enough, but 2-5 is better. These model answers can simply be the top human scored essays, but would be in addition to the 100 training essays.
After training and validation, we can process any number of unscored essays on the same topic. Typically, an essay is graded in 2-3 seconds.
Interactive visual feedback is provided for each essay, including spelling errors, grammatical errors, a simple document parse tree, and graphical representation of concepts that a student under/over emphasised in comparison with the model answer/s. Teachers can click on a concept, in either the student or model answers, and the concept occurrence in the essay is highlighted.
An overall graphical summary shows the student cohort's coverage of concepts in comparison with the model answers. This can help the teacher see where the cohort as a whole under/over emphasised essay content. The next time the topic is discussed in class, the teacher can use this information to indicate the important, and not so important, content to the students and correct their misunderstandings of the topic.
For the short answers, we need 30 human graded essays on the required topic to train the system, and a further 30 human graded essays to validate the scoring equation developed during the training process. Better performance results if the same 2-3 humans grade each essay, but this is not necessary.
After training and validation, we can process any number of unscored essays on the same topic. Typically, an essay is graded in 1 second.
A printed report for each essay is provided. The report contains a score, reading ease and level, spelling and grammatical errors, details on noun and verb phrases, and other essay statistics. A comparison of concepts discussed by the student versus a model answer, which is typically the highest human graded essay in the training set, is also provided.
